Welcome to PerformSD, the City of San Diego’s first performance dashboard.
This dashboard tracks the City’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and other information. Data about how the City performs is visualized through charts, graphs, and other infographics to tell a story. As a resident, you deserve to know at a glance whether your city is meeting the goals that drive it to improve services.
PerformSD is organized around the City’s Strategic Plan, KPIs in the FY 2017 budget, individual department goals, and inquiries from the public and decision-makers. These indicators cover a variety of areas, including recreation and culture, public safety, infrastructure, sustainability, transportation and mobility, economy and finance, civic engagement, communication and customer service.
The Performance & Analytics Department built this dashboard in-house and launched an alpha version in July 2016. Because this is the first time the City has displayed interactive data behind performance metrics, we are still experimenting to find out what works and what doesn’t. We are actively seeking suggestions for further improvements. This dashboard should convey the best information in the most understandable way possible, and our philosophy is to prototype quickly, fail fast, and reduce unnecessary work for our employees to display information and for our residents to find it.
Improving City services is an ongoing effort, and a citywide performance dashboard must be flexible enough to keep up with objectives and targets as they change. For this reason, we decided against hiring a vendor that would build a dashboard with less flexibility at a higher cost and instead built our own site. The charts you see here were made with Tableau, a powerful tool in the field of visual analytics. The overall website was developed using open-source technologies and is hosted on Github.
As the look and functionality of this dashboard improves, expect the information to improve as well. For the alpha release, we accepted data from a variety of sources. Some of this data covers longer time periods, and some is more in-depth. We are working to standardize data reporting for this tool, especially as we ramp up other efforts to open up data at data.sandiego.gov.
Performance & Analytics is the City’s startup within the city, pursuing Mayor Faulconer’s goal of a city government as innovative as the people we serve. Our philosophy is to prototype quickly, learn from our users, and build awesome things to improve the community we all call home and to better connect you with your government.
